Moving or Downsizing in Denver?
Here’s How to Prep Your Home
Denver’s real estate market is always moving—whether you’re downsizing, relocating, or simply craving a fresh start, the process can be a major undertaking. Strategic Spaces can help you prep your home, shed excess stuff, and make your next move your best one.
Start Sooner Than You Think
Declutter before you list, not after. Things can move quickly, and you don’t want to put yourself under unexpected stress trying to manage your move while attempting to thoughtfully declutter.
Sort With Intention
What will realistically fit and serve your next chapter? Are you moving into a space with more or less closet storage? Has your lifestyle evolved significantly since you’ve moved into your current space? Are your kids grown, yet there’s a few lingering clean diapers hiding in the back of a dresser? Make sure that you’re only moving items that make sense for your time and space in life.
Use a Packing System
Label by room and use color codes if needed. Towels and clothing make great padding for fragile items, and save you both cost of packing supplies and space in boxes. Ensure that any packed cardboard boxes are topped up - you don’t want them to cave in if a heavy box gets placed on top. Label the top and at least one side of every box with the room and contents to make sure you know what’s getting packed! And if you’re transporting any open liquids, may they be toiletries or pantry items, make sure to add some cling film under the cap or tape the top to ensure they arrive to your new home leak-free.
Let Go Strategically
Donate, sell, or recycle what you no longer need. Be realistic about what the resale market is for items you want to sell, and how much your time is worth that you’re willing to spend on managing a sale. Most times, it is more time and cost effective to donate or give away. Consider that kitchen appliance that a kind friend bought as a housewarming present and has sat in the back of the cupboard for years, or those very kind gifts your mother-in-law has mailed but don’t have a need. Mentally thank them for their gifts and their consideration, and let them find their next owner.
Plan for Landing
Think through your next space layout before unpacking. If you know where items will be going in the new home, label the box with their destination room. Many boxes will be the same (kitchen, primary bedroom), but if you’re moving into a space with a new office, playroom, or guest room, consider it while labeling. It’ll save you unnecessary time shuffling and sorting when you’re in your new home.
