How Denver's Seasons Affect How You Organize Your Home
Storing bulky jackets and seasonal sports equipment
Living in Denver means embracing all four seasons—sometimes in the same week! Whether it's bulky winter coats or outdoor summer gear, the constant shifts can challenge even the most organized household. Here’s how to plan your home systems with Colorado’s seasonal rhythms in mind.
Designate Seasonal “Swap” Zones
Bins, closets, or drawers that rotate with the weather. Denver’s historical architecture means that many of us are left without large closets to store all of our winter coats next to our swimsuits. While decluttering your wardrobe can be helpful, sometimes you reach the point where you need to change your strategy. Properly pack your out-of-season wares in bags or tubs that can be slid into a storage closet, basement, or under the bed. Just keep out your mid-weight layers for Spring hikes!
Optimize Entryways
Mudrooms or front halls are high-traffic, high-clutter areas. You aren’t going to be wearing your fuzzy winter slippers in the peak of summer, and you won’t be using your pool sandals when it’s snowing outside. Get an appropriate shoe rack that stores daily shoes for your household, and put the rest away! The same goes for your chic-yet-bulky wool coats. You’re likely wearing your trusty puffy jacket most winter days. Keep your daily jackets on your coat rack, and move those occasion coats to the coat closet.
Create Garage Systems
Keep gear accessible but not in the way. In Colorado, we love hobbies. You probably have snow sports gear, camping equipment, a paddle board, Red Rocks tailgating gear, and more. Don’t leave it all in a pile in the garage. Invest in shelving, hooks, and storage solutions that will ensure that you are set up for success and can quickly find your volleyball net to bring to Wash Park for the first warm days of Spring.
Don’t Forget Seasonal Declutters
Each season = a new opportunity to reassess. Bodies change, trends change, and that item you wishfully bought at the beginning of the season has been sitting in your closet. While it never feels good to purge an item you were hopeful about, it feels worse to hold onto it and feel guilty. Be honest with yourself about items that are ripped, stained, torn, don’t fit your body, and don’t mesh with your style.
